Replace Missing Tooth / Teeth

Problem

You are missing a tooth.

Solution

There are two fixed options to replace a missing tooth.  Fixed means that the replacement tooth is not removable.  An example of removable would be a retainer or denture.

Options.  Dental Implant or Bridge

Bonded Porcelain to Metal Bridges (aka Maryland Bridge)
Bridge is metal reinforced for strength.

Ideal Candidate. Missing a single front tooth and the adjacent teeth (abutments) are healthy natural teeth.

Procedure. The teeth adjacent to the missing tooth site (abutment teeth) are slightly reduced from the inside part of the tooth. When the bridge is ready it is tried in and bonded to the abutment teeth.

Time Commitment. 2-3 appointments

Fees. Range from $900 - $1800 per tooth

Dental Implant

Ideal Candidate.  Most any missing tooth can be replaced with an implant if there is adequate bone. Implants can be placed in teenagers to seniors.  It is considered the first choice in tooth replacement.

Procedure.  Dental Implant placement is a surgical procedure. You will have an initial evaluation with the Cosmetic Dentist to determine if a Dental Implant is right for you.  Your dentist will then recommend a course of action.  Many Cosmetic Dentists work with other specialists that place the implant.  These specialists are usually Oral Surgeons or Periodontists with whom your Cosmetic Dentist works. After the Dental Implant is placed it must heal.  This takes several months, after which your Cosmetic Dentist will then place a Porcelain Crown on the implant.

Time Commitment.  Multiple appointments and 3-9 months depending upon the situation.

Fees. Range from $1500 -$2800 per tooth exclusive of the surgery fees for the dental implant placement.

Bridges

There are four types of Bridges that can be used to replace missing teeth: 1) All Porcelain Bridges, 2) Porcelain to Metal Bridges, 3) Bonded Porcelain to Metal Bridges and 4) Bonded Porcelain Bridges

All Porcelain Bridges

Ideal Candidate.  Replacement of a single missing front tooth.

Procedure.  The teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth are reduced in size to accommodate a crown on each of these teeth.  These crowns act as anchors on each side of the false tooth.  When you leave the first appointment you will have a provisional plastic bridge (aka a "temporary bridge") that will be tooth colored and shaped. It will have a pontic (the false tooth in between) in it to replace the missing tooth.  When the all Porcelain Bridge has been made, you will return to the office for placement of the bridge.  Placement is done only after the bridge is tried in and the color, shape and size are correct.

Time Commitment. 2 - 3 appointments.

Fees. Range from $900 - $1800 per tooth.

Most all Porcelain Bridges are three teeth.
